Medical assistants play an increasingly important role in
the range of healthcare offered by physicians and other
healthcare professionals. Medical assistants take on some
of the more routine healthcare tasks, such as preparing
patients for medical examination, updating and filing patient
records, making appointments, preparing routine prescriptions,
and preparing samples for laboratory testing.
Medical assistants enter the profession via medical assistant
schools, gaining a certificate or a degree. Courses include
subjects such as anatomy, physiology, medical terminology,
pharmacology, patient care, medical hygiene and health information
systems.
Career prospects are good, with the number of jobs in the
profession forecast to grow in the next ten years. Medical
assistants work in hospitals as well as physicians practices,
ophthalmology practices and clinics. Many people go on to
other related healthcare careers such as healthcare information
systems managers and healthcare administrators. This is
a job for a lifetime, with the added benefit of knowing
that you are contributing to people’s health.
