Medical Coding Career Information

As healthcare becomes more expensive, and people rely on insurance funding for their healthcare, so the job of medical coding - which is one of the major ways in which insurance companies and the healthcare industry communicate on a day-to-day basis – becomes more important. Medical coders are in increasing demand, and are likely to remain so for a number of years.
Medical coders often enter the profession through a college or university course, usually a two or four year degree. The courses give a background of medical terminology and some knowledge of anatomy and physiology, plus billing and administrative information, and knowledge of the necessary forms and procedures of the insurance industry.

Many medical coders work in hospitals, physicians practices and clinics. However, because of the specialized and relatively straight forward nature of the work, medical coders often get the opportunity to work at home, receiving primary information over the internet, and sending results back to their employers.
