Medical Transcribing Career Information

Medical transcribers take the dictated notes of medical professionals, such as physicians, surgeons, pathologists, and researchers and transcribe them into written documents, for a number of different uses. These documents are usually used for reports, patient notes, medical records and research notes, and form a part of the body of medical records, so are usually in electronic format so that they can be filed, printed to paper and transmitted electronically.

Medical transcribers have to have a number of skills, including a knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology so that they can detect any obvious errors and make absolutely sure that the documents are clear and unambiguous, as well as secretarial and language skills. Usually medical transcribers will have done a college or university course in medical transcription or a relevant subject.

Medical transcribers often work at home, receiving dictation tapes or having the dictation transmitted electronically, and sending their finished work over the internet. Job prospects are good, with a continuing increase in demand as an aging population means that medical examinations and procedures are on the increase.
